Seminar on CONTENT DELIVERY OVER IP & SATCOM NETWORKS, by Banglore Chapter of BES(I), on28th August 2005 at Hotel Atria, Bangalore

The Bangalore Chapter of the Broadcast Engineering Society of India had organized a one day Workshop on CONTENT DELIVERY OVER IP & SATCOM NETWORKS on the 28th August 2005 at Hotel Atria, Bangalore.

            The workshop was well attended by its local chapter members and delegates from Broadcast and other Industrial Organizations.  The Chairman of the Bangalore Chapter of the BES(I) Shri D.Krishnagopal welcomed the dignitaries and the Hon. Secretary, Shri Sadanand Patil gave a resume about the local chapters activities from its inception and introduced the main theme of the present Workshop and the day’s technical proceedings.  The President of the Broadcast Engineering Society (India) Shri N.S.Ganesan in his address explained the society’s commitment in promoting the fast changing technology and transform them to the utmost need of the entire humanity.

            The workshop was inaugurated by Dr.Balaveer Reddy, Vice Chancellor, Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, an eminent scholar with many contributions in the field of technical education. He spoke about the technology application in the field of Education and explained how this is adopted at over 100 colleges in the University and its usefulness to the student community.

            Shri S.Ramaganpathy, Chief General Manager, BSNL , Karnataka in his keynote address stressed the need for adoption of latest technology for the benefit of mankind.  He highlighted the potential of Broadband to provide a lightening means of Data Transmission and enhancing business efficiencies and broadening commercial opportunities.  In his address Shri P.Ravindranath, Director Strategic development/ Govt. & Public Affairs, M/s Hewlett Packard India Pvt. Ltd. Highlighted the company’s role in the field of Broadband and also its commitment in field of e-Governance, Tele Medicine and Distance Education.

            The Chief Guest released a souvenir to commemorate the event.  Later vote of thanks was proposed by the Hon. Treasurer Shri M.K.S.Kumaran.  The workshop was Co-sponsored by M/s Hewlett Packard India Sales Pvt. Ltd. and all the technical sessions were sponsored by M/s Tektronix India Pvt. Ltd.

After the Inaugural ceremony the workshop proceeded to presentation of different topics.

The First session was on ‘ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES FOR BROADBAND’. Under this session there were three presentations.  Sh.K.A.Muralidharan, Sales Manager, M/s Tektronix India presented the first topic of the session on ‘NEW CODING TECHNIQUES’.  In his presentation he explained the MPEG-4 object based coding standards and algorithms developed to perform bit allocation at the object level.  The second Topic was on ‘VIDEO OVER TELECOM NETWORKS’ presented by Sh.Sanjay Gupta,Fixed Communication Group, M/s Alcatel (I) Ltd.  He gave brief description on DSL Technology Evolution, Triple Play and Bandwidth requirement and DSLAM for video delivery.  The third topic was on ‘IP SERVICES OVER BROADBAND NETWORKS’ presented by Sh.Venkatasubbu, Senior Solution Architect, M/s Hewlett Packard.

The Second Session was on ‘APPLICATION OVER IP NETWORKS’.  Under this session there were three presentations.  The first topic was ‘VIDEO STREAMING & REAL TIME VIDEO’ presented by Sh.Prashanth Rao, Project Manager, M/s Motorola India Pvt Ltd.  In his presentation he explained the difference between Video Streaming and Real time Video, various mediums for these applications, New and exciting streaming video over hand held devices i.e DVB-H.  The second topic of the session was on ‘IP TELEPHONY’ presented by Sh.Karthik Natarajan, Managing Director, M/s Snom Technology India Pvt. Ltd.  He explained how VoIP is changing the Telecom Scenario worldwide, the opportunities and threats to this technology and how we can do value addition for the customers.  The third topic was on e-GOVERNANCE and was presented by Sh.P.Ravindranath, Director, Strategic Development/Govt. Affairs, M/s Hewlett Packard.

The third and the last session was on VALUE ADDED SERVICES.  Under this session there were three topics.  The first on SECURITY PRINTING was presented by Shri Girish Krishnamurthy, Hewlett Packard.  This was followed by the second topic TELE MEDICINE presented by Sh. Hanumantharayappa Scientists/Engineer, ISRO on behalf of
Sh. L.Satyamurthy, Director, and Sh.R.L.N.Murthy, Manager Business Development, Antrix Corp. ISRO HQ.  He talked about the healing tough from space delivery of specialty healthcare redefined and also about the involvement of ISRO in this field.  The third and the last topic of the session was on TELE EDUCATION and was presented by Sh.D.John, Dy.Programme Director EduSat & Dy.Director Satcom Application ISRO, HQ. He explained the Technology to reach the un-reached and spread the education to every nook and corner of the country.

The above Three sessions were chaired by Sh.P.S.Sundaram, Managing Director, Technomedia Solutions (P) Ltd., Sh.R.K.Arnold, Principal General manager, BSNL, Bangalore Telecom and Sh.S.J.D.Devasahayam, Superintending Engineer, Doordarshan Kendra, Chennai respectively.

A demonstration was arranged between 1230 to 1330 hrs and M/s Tektronix India Pvt. Ltd, M/s Bharat Electronics Ltd. M/s Takshana Technologies Pvt Ltd. And M/s BSNL demonstrated their products to the participants of the workshop.

Two minutes silence was observed to mourn the death of Shri G.N.Hangal, Chief Engineer (Retd,) Doordarshan and one of the founder member of the Broadcast Engineering Society (India) and an active member of Bangalore Chapter.

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks to all the dignitaries, presenters, delegates, sponsors and advertisers.
