BES Expo 2005

Inauguration

The 11th International Conference and Exhibition on Terrestrial & Satellite broadcasting with the theme Broadcasting: Vision 2020 had its grand gala opening on 17th February 2005 in Shahjahan Hall, Taj Palace Hotel, Sardar Patel Marg, New Delhi. The function started with the invocation. The event was inaugurated by Shri Jaipal Reddy, Hon’ble Minister of I&B and Culture, by lighting a ceremonial lamp. The function was presided over by Shri K.Rehman Khan, Hon’ble Dy.Chairman, Rajya Sabha. The Guest of Honour was Shri Navin Chawla, Secretary Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. The key-note address was delivered by Shri K.S.Sarma, CEO, Prasar Bharati.

The inaugural function was organized with all colours and gaiety was witnessed by VVIPs, Press and Media, representatives of various organizations, delegates and exhibitors around the world. The overwhelming response that the BES EXPO is receiving year after year speaks volumes about the rising stature of the Society. On the inaugural day, the Society felicitated Lt. Gen.D.P.Sehgal, PVSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd.), President, ITET and Shri K.S.Sarma, CEO, Prasar Bharati by conferring Honorary Fellowships of the Society by the Hon’ble Minister of I&B Dr. K.Kasturirangan, Hon’ble Member Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Internationally renowned space scientist was honoured with the Honorary Fellowship of Society later on 19.02.2005.

On this occasion, the Society brought out four publications namely Conference Proceedings, Exhibition Direcotry, A book on Broadband – “Facets of Broadband” and a BES News Letter. Whereas the news Letter and Exhibition Directory were released by Shri Navin Chawla, the Conference Proceedings and Book on Broadband were released by Shri K. Rehman Khan.

Shri Navin Chawla, Secretary, Ministry of I&B appreciated the role of broadcast engineers in promoting broadcasting in the country. He lauded the efforts made by the engineers to bring normalcy of broadcast services in the Tsunami affected areas very promptly.

Shri K.Rehman Khan called the theme of the conference very appropriate and linked it with the Vision of the nation taking India among the developed countries by 2020.

The Hon’ble Minister of I&B in his address gave very useful guidelines on the role of technologies which would go long way in the growth of broadcasting in the country . He applauded the role of broadcast engineers in reaching the un reached with the evolution of DTH.

Shri K.S.Sarma, CEO, Prasar Bharati in his keynote address talked about the trends set by Prasar Bharati with the implementation of DTH and gave the agenda points to full full the obligations of Public Service Broadcaster.

During the inaugural function the Hon’ble Chief Guest also distributed the BES Annual Awards.

After the inaugural ceremony the Hon’ble Minister of I&B Shri S.Jaipal Reddy formally inaugurated the Exhibition by cutting the ribbon. He was so impressed with the equipment and services displayed by the exhibitors around the World that inspite of his busy schedule he visited most of the stalls and shown his keen interest. This year the response of exhibitors was ever highest and the 65 companies from 25 countries setup their stalls in six halls namely Darbar, Vazir, Mumtaz Alamgir, Roshanara and Exhibition Room as against in five halls last year. The Taj Palace Hotel remained over crowded with the visitor’s presence on all the three days i.e. 17th, 18th and 19th Feburary 2005.

An estimated 25% growth of visitors and about 40% of delegates made the 11th BES EXPO 2005 a grant success and memorable event in the history of the society.

This year the exhibitors stressed upon system integration and total solutions for Radio and TV Broadcasting. The display of new technology of new automation satellite broadcasting and storage solutions have been the star attractions. The display of alternate and tape less storage technologies XDACM from Sony and P2 from Panasonic, the graphic solutions with user friendly work flow from Vertigo Media, Apple, Avid and Discreet attracted the visitors in particular.

There was a Tutorial Session on the opening day on Emerging Standards on DVB and besides six sessions of the Conference spread over on 18th and 19th February 2005 and two key note sessions one each day. On 18th Feb. the key-note speaker was LT. Gen D.P Sehgal who talked about current technologies like Compression, Digitalization, DTH, HDTV, Internet and the Broadband. The other key note speaker Dr. K.Kasturirangan vividly described the genesis of Space Programme and talked about the future scenario in view of changing demographic pattern of culture and aspirations of the masses. He stressed that the Broadcasting is in exciting stage and had challenges ahead for which the broadcasters need to prepare themselves.

In the six sessions issues involved in mobile broadcasting, future trends and technologies of Programme productions, the future of broadcasting in the digital age and prospects and challenges for digital radio technologies were discussed largely. The Internationally known speakers and panelists viz Mr. Peter MacAVock, Mr. Phillip Leve, Mr. LucHaeverie, Mr. Iain Wood Mr. Saeigo Asada Mr Roderick Snell, Mr. Rukmin Vizemanne, Mr. Hans Peter Quade, Mr.Wolfgang Rittsteiger, Mr. Jeff Astle, Mr.I.J.Cornel, Mr.Charlse W.Kelly, Mr. Dinesh Sawhney, Mr. N.M.Mehra, Mr.Chellem Bose and Mr.P.Garg deliberated the various aspects of current and future of Broadcasting. The Sessions were chaired by eminent personalities viz. Prof. K.K.Agarwal, Vice Chancellor, GGS Indraprastha University, Shri K.M.Paul, E-in-C, AIR, Shri B.K.De and Shri R.K.Gupta former E-in-Chiefs, DDI and Shri P.S.Sundaram, CEO, Technomedia Solutions. In the last and concluding session on Digital Cinema, the thoughts of Mr. N.Chandrasekhar and Mr. N.Ananthakrishnan were shared by the delegates.

Before concluding the event a valedictory session with Justice P.V.Reddi, Judge Supreme Court of India was organized. Justice redid described the role of judiciary in dealing with broadcasting issues of the countries from time to time.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by the Hon. Secretary and announcement for the 12th International Exhibition & Conference – BES EXPO 2006 to be held on 9th, 10th and 11th February 2006 on the theme Broadcast trends: Reaching the unreached.
