Broadcasting – Emerging Technologies in Mobile World

Keeping in pace with the technological advancements made in the field of Broadcasting and Communication, BES (I) Chennai Chapter had organized a one day seminar on the theme “Broadcasting – Emerging Technologies in Mobile World” on 8th September, 2006 at Hotel Ambassador Pallava, Chennai. This was a grand yearly event of BES (I) Chennai Chapter that witnessed an overwhelming response from its members and delegates.

Hon’ble Shri Justice P Sathasivam, Judge, High Court, Madras was the Chief Guest of the inaugural session. In his inaugural address, Justice Sathasivam explained about the spectacular progress made in the field of Broadcasting industry. He stated that though advancements made in Technologies deserve appreciation, every new technology is a double edged weapon as it has got both advantages and disadvantages, hence it should be handled diligently and put to use for the welfare and upliftment of the society. He explained how these new technologies could be misused and exploited to infringe upon the privacy of the people. He called upon the experts to act vigorously and vigilantly so that the technological innovations and benefits derived from them rest with the people free of any harm.

Dr. D Viswanathan, Vice Chancellor, Anna University, Chennai presided over the function and delivered the Keynote address. In his Keynote address the Vice Chancellor observed that India should attain self-sufficiency technologically by indigenizing the latest technologies in the field of communication and broadcasting. He also cautioned the younger generation that these technologies should be used for legitimate and lawful purposes and the adverse impacts that these technologies can bring, will prove havoc if not handled properly. He stressed the need for taking lakhs of students across the country in the right path in different field of education to make country’s flag fly high in the international arena. He also released the souvenir, which was brought out on this occasion.

Shri N S Ganesan, Engineer-in-Chief, Doordarshan in his special address stressed upon the importance of the content for the success of these technologies. He explained how the content and carrier are inter-oven and for the success of broadcasting both are essential. He stated, with the advancement of these technologies, the digital divide is getting bridged and the technological gap between ‘rich and the poor’, ‘have and have nots’ ‘urban and rural’ are getting narrowed down. He called upon the Technologists and Engineers to ensure these technologies “reach the unreached”. He also inaugurated the Exhibition organized at the Seminar Hall.

Shri S Ramaswamy, Chairman BES (I) Chennai Chapter, welcomed the dignitaries and Shri N Thiyagarajan, Secretary BES (I) Chennai Chapter, proposed vote of thanks at the end of the inaugural session.

The inaugural session was followed by technical sessions on the topics “Digital Video Broadcasting -- Handheld devices” chaired by Shri Rahul Nera, Country Manager India, Director Business Development-South Asia and Singapore, IRDETO and “3G & Beyond” chaired by Shri P.S.Sundaram, Managing Director, Technomedia Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Eminent speakers from Shaf Broadcast, Doordarshan, BEL, BSNL, Sasken Communication Technologies Limited, ITTIAM Systems, INFOSYS Technologies made presentations on DVB-H, DVB-T, IPTV, 3-G, DMB and other upcoming technologies .

The third session was a panel discussion on the topic “Opportunities, Challenges & social impacts” of these emerging technologies. This session was chaired by Shri P.Mohanadoss, Chief Engineer (Retired) of AIR TV. Experts from MIDAS Communication Technology, Research & Development of AIR & DD, FEDCOT and Public Activist participated in this programme that was very well received by the audience.

Equipment manufacturers from various organizations like BEL, Reliance Communication, LG Electronics, Shaf Broadcast, MLP Hitech Electric Company and JEF Marketing Pvt. Ltd., displayed their latest technologies and products in the exhibition, which was thronged by the delegates.

More than 400 delegates from various organizations like AIR, Doordarshan, BSNL, BEL, Faculty members and students of Engineering Colleges and professional bodies like Institution of Engineers and IETE participated in this mega event.

The event was widely covered by the leading national and vernacular dailies besides AIR, Doordarshan and other private channels.

The seminar was a grand success.
